Oracular

Have you ever been so immersed in a conversation or activity that you kind of phase everything else out, and then something jars you back into reality real fast? I bet you have. No doubt about it. In fact I KNOW you have. It's how it works. Man, it even happens in dreams....

So yes, I was dreaming, I was with a group of my peers, a random selection of people I've known, doing some sort of activity. Something grabbed my attention and I became engrossed with it, around me things continued to happen in a muted way (This was a dream, so nothing was exactly cleanly cut like this, but I digress), and so I kind of parallel dreamed this event along with the background hum, where the even was as sharp as a dream can be, and the background seemed to slow down, fade away, like I'd been detached from reality, but at the same time still in it. I think I may not have been jarred from it, more a fading of the perception of the event, until I was 'back in reality', as they say.

After a short amount of time dreaming, (peh I think, thats kinda what I remmeber) it happened again, this time in a restaurant, engaging with someone, when I felt the presence of someone else; seemingly older or more wise than I, she communicated of things strangely, mystically (I cant remember her speaking things aloud, or hearing her directly at least). Yet again the scene was distinct from my comprehension, we seemed trapped in a bubble. And then it faded or popped, and I remember nothing but awaking (to real life this time...at least I think it is ¬.¬) from a dream....

Right, this is rather imperfect, even more so than I wished since I waited a day and a bit to regurgitate it, after mulling over the following idea for a while. The idea itself I realised straight away, or at least I cannot remember any differences between its current form and the state I first remember it being.

Once again it comes in the form of a game, a strongly story based game this time. Either a thriller or an adventure I don't know, possibly both, and no doubt something similar has been done before, that maybe I'm just partially remembering and applying to this 'experience' I had. The major points of the story start similar to the dream above, Normality followed by a random series of these things. Some just on your own, maybe wondering why you're experiencing like this, without knowing you're the cause or how to stop it consciously; others wherein you have companions, whether they be just your colleagues or some random person who helps/confuses/etc. you. Some of the experiences are jarred, others fade, maybe some of them are so subtle that you dont realise they happened until you jar yourself out of them, or dont realise at all if you fade from them.

The game progresses, and you come to find/discover your 'powers' as that you can pull yourself out of reality, and sometimes others (or be pulled yourself). Others exist that have the powers, some appear to be oracles/prophets (Hence the name Oracular), teachers and things.

I don't propose the story, merely the setting. I thought it might be awesome. :)

A Story

Well, more a backstory to a universe of many stories. Pretty standard start in scifi.

I started thinking about it in the car last night, on the way to a concert, and further developed it whilst sat in a fantastic bookshop.

[ It's been moved here ]

Thats that done as much as I can concentrate on in one sitting. Theres more, I just cant get it out yet.

A short blah

She was sat at her pc, oblivious to my prying mind, I slowly amalgamate into being in her conciousness. I had been listening to her thoughts for roughly 10 minutes, feeling her joy when she laughed, and feeling her sorrow in the silences between them. She was shocked to see me, well who wouldnt be, with me simply appearing next to her. Maybe I shouldn’t have jokingly threatened her with kidnap in the passed, as she automatically lashed out quite violently. Her first words were “GET AWAY FROM ME!!!”. And yet nobody heard her, for I was in control. Her voice box silent, her eyes glazed, staring into the middle distance. I had pulled her into a virtual world, moved her concious thought patterns into a place where she still thinks she is in her room, and yet I am there with her. The scene could have been anywhere, I only chose this one for her benefit. She was still visibly both terrified and fuming. I was talking over her, explaining to her in simple terms why I was here. I didnt even need to do that, I could have modified her conciousness to full understanding of whatever I wanted in mere instants. I didnt, for the simple idea of changing as little as possible. She was only told what she needed to be, my voice a calming influence as well as a source of information. At last she was quiet. Knowing this, I dropped her back into the real world and became visible to her. I opened a portal to the meeting point for her to travel though whilst she was getting ready. By the time she arrived my other friends had already gathered, their respective gateways closed. All were slightly disorientated, wondering blindly where they were. I appeared in the flesh, to great applause…well maybe not, but I still appeared. My lady friend stared at me balefully, understandable really. I

yeah, its not finished….. meh

The start of a Story

Tonight, this night, a star falls. It falls from afar. It falls unnoticed. It glows, it glows. They say it burns, the scientists of this world, they say it glows with heat caused by the friction of the atmosphere. How wrong they are. The glow is seen from far and wide. It is reported further, to every nation and province the world over. But in truth very few notice. Only the sky-watchers care, the astronomers as they call themselves. It was a totally unexpected phenomenon, none of the ‘scientists’ who have access to their artificial satellites noticed any anomalous objects before it were already here.

Another conundrum was what happened to it. With all their computational equipment, they had plotted its decent and believed it should have landed in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and make a large splash. After estimating its proportions, they calculated it would bring around a catastrophe not seen since the Dinosaurs. They scouted and they reconed but could not find any sign of devastation, or even mild turmoil. The site predicted was little different to what it had always been, according to the limited records of the place.

That event was [x] years ago. I arrived that night upon a star, its glowing light so fair, and yet not a patch on the beauty of my home world, or even the greatness of the vast universe, but I digress. My star-ship arrived above the ocean and slowly submerged, making but a few ripples in the surface and then, as designed, it did the most magical thing: it dissolved. In the blink of an eye it was gone, and me with it, for it was me, and I were it. Quickly we spread, diffusing unnaturally to all the corners of the earth, and I became Terra, the earth became me. All the hidden depths, the secret lives and the known. Every ounce of the earth’s history poured into my memory in less than a few seconds, and I greeted my counterpart, my comrade, who revealed itself from every point at once, as it prepared to leave (in a far more discreet fashion than I arrived, I do love to show off). He had intervened few times in his long stay observing. The most notable include the demise of the dinosaurs (who’s traits and attributes he fully saved and archived for later recreation some place else), to allow a greater life to emerge, as he saw they were becoming stagnant, not evolving further to a point in which they could eventually join us, and the many millions like us, who have collected and examined since time begun. The current species were nudged and guided quietly by him, and was rewarded by inspiring their story-like nature to think of wizards and other magical beings. He quietly handed over the reigns of loose control and disappeared ‘thought the back door’.

Many stories could follow such as:

  • Giving some person any knowledge he wishes, who creates personal shields and space travel etc…
  • A website witch allows people to request a wish (or wizarding act) with maybe some terms-and-conditions like no world peace and things.
  • Backstory like Merlin.
  • Other timelines as their race comes to the point in which they have mastered time and space, and can spy along any road, and move between eventless paths. Some of these timelines/stories have been biographed by humans, from ‘my predecessor’.
  • ‘Governments study me and I later laugh at them for thinking that that was actually me’ kinda things
