Oracular

Have you ever been so immersed in a conversation or activity that you kind of phase everything else out, and then something jars you back into reality real fast? I bet you have. No doubt about it. In fact I KNOW you have. It's how it works. Man, it even happens in dreams....

So yes, I was dreaming, I was with a group of my peers, a random selection of people I've known, doing some sort of activity. Something grabbed my attention and I became engrossed with it, around me things continued to happen in a muted way (This was a dream, so nothing was exactly cleanly cut like this, but I digress), and so I kind of parallel dreamed this event along with the background hum, where the even was as sharp as a dream can be, and the background seemed to slow down, fade away, like I'd been detached from reality, but at the same time still in it. I think I may not have been jarred from it, more a fading of the perception of the event, until I was 'back in reality', as they say.

After a short amount of time dreaming, (peh I think, thats kinda what I remmeber) it happened again, this time in a restaurant, engaging with someone, when I felt the presence of someone else; seemingly older or more wise than I, she communicated of things strangely, mystically (I cant remember her speaking things aloud, or hearing her directly at least). Yet again the scene was distinct from my comprehension, we seemed trapped in a bubble. And then it faded or popped, and I remember nothing but awaking (to real life this time...at least I think it is ¬.¬) from a dream....

Right, this is rather imperfect, even more so than I wished since I waited a day and a bit to regurgitate it, after mulling over the following idea for a while. The idea itself I realised straight away, or at least I cannot remember any differences between its current form and the state I first remember it being.

Once again it comes in the form of a game, a strongly story based game this time. Either a thriller or an adventure I don't know, possibly both, and no doubt something similar has been done before, that maybe I'm just partially remembering and applying to this 'experience' I had. The major points of the story start similar to the dream above, Normality followed by a random series of these things. Some just on your own, maybe wondering why you're experiencing like this, without knowing you're the cause or how to stop it consciously; others wherein you have companions, whether they be just your colleagues or some random person who helps/confuses/etc. you. Some of the experiences are jarred, others fade, maybe some of them are so subtle that you dont realise they happened until you jar yourself out of them, or dont realise at all if you fade from them.

The game progresses, and you come to find/discover your 'powers' as that you can pull yourself out of reality, and sometimes others (or be pulled yourself). Others exist that have the powers, some appear to be oracles/prophets (Hence the name Oracular), teachers and things.

I don't propose the story, merely the setting. I thought it might be awesome. :)

Multi'Verses

Another game/set, this time in which the game worlds are each fully implemented copies of worlds from fantasy books (or original worlds) where the story is told by scripted NPC’s so the game follows the books exactly. THEN you throw in a number of completely random and unrelated lot, with non-story-related plots. Each of these plots is made in such a way as to lead you to a goal and on the way let you observe the story of the basis.

A short example would be Tolkien’s universe, in which the game portrays the story of The Hobbit, (but could be scaled to include Lord of the Rings, and the other works) and the player gets to play a hobbit until Bilbo’s party, then switch to a Grey Elf whilst in Rivendell. Another they could play is a Dwarf before the fall of Moria, or an orc whilst the Balrog fights Gandalf. etc etc.

It only really works in the greatest of epics, the most believable of worlds.

So, another quick idea

For a game this time (or more a mechanics demo):

A openworld where the character(s) can shrink/enlarge by factors of a (arbitrary but tuned) base. For example if we chose base 10, the original mode would be 0 (10^0). Mode 1 would make the character a tenth of the size (10^-1). Mode -1 would be the opposite, the character would be 10 times bigger. The world would be generated in such a way that each mode is still interesting, eg: (base 10) Mode 0 ground is flat, whereas at Mode 3, it would become quite pronounced, and you best watch out for the other Mode 0 constructs, who might step on you…Escape by going down to Mode 6 and jumping next to a particle…

How about setting up shop on another constructs being? A whole community in a shoe? But what if the host resizes? easy: everything ‘on’ (gravity? effects on small/large constructs?) said construct gets resized with it. (How to deal with small things on things getting smaller? you cant get smaller if something on you is at Lowest Mode or hosted stuff gets kicked off, or just cant leave you whilst you are below a certain Mode.)

I dont know how to make the larger negative modes fun unless you leave for space…and I guess you could make a game out of it by making the resizes timed, with an upgrade/unlock system that allows you to stay at certain levels for longer, or progress to deeper levels or a finer base etc.

You could resize whilst under someone, and knock them over…lol

acompishm.net

Weird little social site idea. Liek all those silly checkin places. Why not do one for accomplishments/achievements. Theres’ probably similar things out there. But anyway:

records:[
    ... ,
{ person: Einstein, verb: theorise, subject: general relativity , date: 1915, cite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_relativity, votes: 19384 },
    ... ,
{ person: @stephenfry, verb:release, subject: ...Moab..., date: [release date], cite: blahblahbla, votes: 2002 },
    ...
]

So, anyone can come along and insert one of their achievements, and it can be voted up by others, etc. famous stuff can be added wiki-style, or by skimming wikipedia, etc. The person field can be a link to a twitter/facebook/etc account/page/etc. the verb field modifies the subject field. date, cite and votes are what you’d expect. Other things can be added.

A Story

Well, more a backstory to a universe of many stories. Pretty standard start in scifi.

I started thinking about it in the car last night, on the way to a concert, and further developed it whilst sat in a fantastic bookshop.

[ It's been moved here ]

Thats that done as much as I can concentrate on in one sitting. Theres more, I just cant get it out yet.

A New OS

One with such features as:

  • Document driven database as filesystem (preferably in JSON or similar like couchdb)
  • OOP shell language (like javascript or similar)
  • 2 different GUI’s:
    • Massive Desktop
    • Tabbed Desktop: A little like the IDE’s (I’m sure I’ve written about it before). With all the software built specifically for it.
  • Just Working…. lol

I’d like it to happen, but it never will…

A little, distributed, dynamic computer thing

Media_httpimg340image_fpvbd

So, theres a few different versions, and whilst I was working over summer (why I wasnt here) I shared a link with a colleague about a distributed, dynamicly linking processor thing, and we started discussing how we could make one of our own (being that we worked in an electronics lab). The main problems we faced were about the communication connnections and the necessary symmetry needed. We were thinking squares and we threw a number of ideas around, none of which weren’t that great tbh.

I started thinking about it again yesterday, and jotted a few things down. I decided to go for a triangle shape due to the fact that it would be symmetric for the coms.

The image at the top shows the footprint for the coms, where the two outsticking ‘pins’ fit into the other two ‘holes’, giving full-duplex coms and 2 power lines, these are mounted on the same side as all the basic internal structure of the board. So if you plug a few together you have a self updating network. Each has its own unique ID and every message/packet is addressed to one specific board. When a packet is received, the destination address is read (and a hash of the whole package is stored in a time-expiring set) and then offered to all its neighbours. If the packet has already been sent through this board recently (its still in the set) it is ignored. If the package is addressed to this board, it isnt transmitted but is used instead.

A board can be specialised with some kind of IO ports and things, for example a RJ45 connector could be affixed to the opposite side of the board and this board could then be use to push things onto an external network. Or two could be joined together and dedicated to a serial port (two because of its size). Etc, etc…

The idea being that you could build the equivalent of a standard PC and just beable to add IO and storage etc. on the fly.

Some ideas and shizz

Currently Brainstorming: A cloudy-p2p-GUI thing, that has a shared canvas desktop thing…Pics coming.

Thinking about: Wringing a story, or many, with awesome things such as: * future where they ‘hack into’ the universes controlling mechanisms. * post apocalypse (possibly) where most of the world is reverted to dark-ish ages but with all the current buildings still around. * matrix like simulation thing. * etc…

also maybe a app for collaborative story authoring/telling/reading with automatic semantic info-collection on characters/places/etc…

and there is still my xcms things to do… but exmans, and the internet, and lack of concentration, etc…. ahh well

Thoughts on Thoughts

Oh FFS GAHHH, I hate my mental state. I have 0 or less short term memory, which makes it totally impossible for me to write anything. I have had so many ideas that I think ‘wow thats awesome’, but by the time I have been in a position to share/develop them I have forgotten them… and its seriously getting on my nerves.

And then comes the second problem: I have absolutely no concentration. I just sat down to blog about a though I had earlier about my feelings towards the opposite sex and relationships and that crap. I really had a gem of an idea. But now it comes down to it, I cant remember it, and what I can remember I cant fucking compose into sensible words.

I actually imagined an awesome representation of what I wish to beable to do: A picture of someone with their brain in their hands, mashing it into the keyboard. At the moment I feel like a guy looking at the world from behind a screen, not being able to compose sense is my downfall.
